Subconscious Mind – Your Auto-Pilot

Do you remember the challenges you had when trying to ride the bicycle the first time?

Have you ever tried to master a new instrument or equipment?

The first attempts to learn anything new is always difficult. The gradual practice of using the equipment makes it less difficult and gradually it reaches a level where every movement flows naturally without any difficulty.

All these automatic movements are guided by the Subconscious Mind, the most powerful inner forces which drive human behaviour.

The “subconscious” is the part of your mind that operates below your normal level of waking consciousness.

Right now while reading this post you are using your conscious mind to do the same and absorb the meaning,

But beneath that mental focus, your subconscious mind is busy working behind the scenes, absorbing or rejecting the information based on an existing perception you have of the world around you.

This existing perception started building when you were infant, it rejected nothing while you were young because you did not have any pre-existing beliefs to contradict what is perceived.

The subconscious mind simply soaks information of every experience like a sponge.

The idea of deeper levels of information processing was extensively studied and developed by Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) who introduced the 3 level mind model. According to his model, the mind could be divided into three levels.

  • The Conscious – it defines all thoughts and action within our awareness.
    • Example the taste of the food you are having or the smell of the perfume you have put.
  • The Subconscious – it defines all reactions and automatic actions we can become aware of if we think about them.
    • Example our ability to drive a car, use a computer once we are skilled we stop thinking which gears or key to use. In spite of multiple actions involved, we can become aware of what was done.
  • The Unconscious – defines all past events and memories, inaccessible to us no matter how hard we try to remember to bring things up.
    • Example the first word we learned to say, or how it felt to be able to walk on our own.

The conscious thinking part of our brain is only 17 % of the total brain. The rest is subconscious.

The Conscious mind’s function is to assimilate and interpret input from all five senses which a human body has.

It is the conscious mind what you are using right now to read this article. It sends the information to the subconscious mind for processing

The brain receives a total of 2000 bits per second, and most of it is processed by the subconscious mind.

The role of the subconscious mind is to process the information which you are consciously not able to do.

The subconscious mind is the most powerful element in your body. It contains all the programming – how your body works, who you are and how you behave.

The subconscious mind is like the hard drive on your computer, a storage area for memories, experiences, feelings, emotions etc. But it also contains your “applications” – your beliefs, morals, value, motivators and de-motivators.

As mentioned earlier in this post that subconscious mind soaks whatever information it is presented with. It is a continuous process and it is a kind of programming which is happening 24X7.

“Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become reality” – Earl Nightingale.

This one sentence is very important to understand the reason for your current situation.

The next question which will arise hereafter so is there any method of changing whatever is stored in the subconscious mind.

Yes, you can reprogram your subconscious mind and change your situation to whatever you desire.

All the information stored is below your level of conscious awareness, the only time you become aware of it is when it limits your progress in creating a balanced, successful and productive life.

The reason for your failure in achieving your goals is most likely the old programmed messages that conflict with the new conditions you want to create.

This is an excellent piece of news as it means you can just about achieve anything which you want if you take the time to reprogram your subconscious mind first.

Before we move forward and discover the methods to reprogram we should understand the impact of the old programming done in your subconscious mind.

Being an adult you must be thinking that it is as easy as discarding the old stored message in your subconscious mind.

The programming of your subconscious mind continues today With every experience you have, you draw certain conclusions and store the messages that will guide your future actions.

It is interesting to know that if you have an experience that conflicts with an already established belief, your subconscious mind will either reject it or reframe it so it goes along with your existing view of reality.

Although there are multiple known methods of reprogramming your subconscious mind, it is advisable that you follow one or two methods to start with so that you can give your full attention rather than diluting your efforts using more methods simultaneously.

The methods are

Environmental Influences

If your daily environment is filled with negativity and strife, imagine the kind of messages which are being absorbed into your mind.

Your first action is yo strictly limit the negativity you’re exposed to from this moment on.

Avoid watching news unless you absolutely must, and avoid spending too much time with toxic people.

Instead, seek out positive information to read and watch and spend most of your time with positive, successful people.

Over a period of time, you will find that more encouraging messages are being absorbed into your mind, which will alter the way you see yourself and your potential.

Visualization

The subconscious mind responds well to pictures. Visualization is a great way too program your mind with positive, empowering images.

Try spending 10 -15 minutes a day visualizing positive scenes that feature you and your life experiences.

Something which you may want to visualize

Fulfilling Relationships

Passionate work

A beautiful home

As you do this consistently you gradually end up redrawing the negative pictures stored from your past experiences.

Allow a feeling of love, joy, gratitude and peace to flow through you as if you were truly having these experiences

Affirmations

Affirmations are also a very effective way to install positive messages into your subconscious.

Affirmations work best if you follow the following simple rule

  • Word them positively, in the present tense :” I am confident and successful” rather than I will be confident and successful.
  • Call up the corresponding feelings
  • Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Apart from the three detailed above, there are other methods like Brain Entrainment Binaural Beats, hypnosis etc.

However, we will currently keep the post limited to these three basic programming techniques.

Develop a strong sense of self-awareness so you can catch self-sabotaging behaviour before it gets out of hand.

If you start feeling stronger, more confident and happier

If you find yourself more willing to take risks and face challenges

If you start feeling excited about your dreams and goals

If you start feeling a deeper sense of inner peace.

You can be assured that the reprogramming efforts are fetching dividends.

The reprogramming process takes time to work.

Expecting immediate changes may not be true most of the times.

The only remedial is being consistent, persistent, and reinforcement as soon as these transformations become apparent you’ll feel motivated to keep moving forward.
